Guyana, Australia discuss security-related issues –during High Commissioner’s visit to Public Security Minister

VICE President and Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan has met with Australian High Commissioner to Guyana Ross Tysoe to discuss security-related issues.Tysoe visited Guyana to conduct bilateral meetings with several government officials.

Tysoe is a Senior Career Officer at Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Based in Trinidad and Tobago, he also holds accreditation as the Australian High Commissioner to CARICOM.

Minister Ramjattan and Tysoe discussed issues such as the treatment of refugees, border security, deportation, gun amnesties, territorial sovereignty, and potential for economic development. The minister and the Australian High Commissioner shared current practices and experiences that obtain in Guyana and Australia respectively. Also discussed were areas where improvement and assistance were needed in Guyana, and possible solutions which could be utilised.

The Australian High Commissioner offered to share with the Government of Guyana information on how the Australian Government dealt with certain issues related to border security, which the minister said would be most welcome.

Minister Ramjattan expressed his appreciation to the Australian High Commissioner for his visit, and the parties agreed to maintain communication with the prospect of collaboration in the future.

The Ministry of Public Security has said it would continue to work with international partners to seek areas of collaboration that would enhance the effectiveness of the security sector in Guyana, and maintain the safety and security of the country’s citizenry.
