THE body of Kaieteur tourist Laleta Sivanand has been flown to the city and a post-mortem is likely by weekend, the Ministry of the Presidency said yesterday afternoon. The body, which was first spotted by a KNP Ranger late Saturday afternoon, was found in a rocky area at the base of the Falls, which had previously been submerged by high water levels, the ministry stated.
Sivanand went missing on September 1. She was at the time with a group of visitors to the Kaieteur National Park. Late in the afternoon of Tuesday September 1, it was discovered that a tourist, who arrived at the KNP on an Air Services Limited flight, was missing after she left her group on the way back from touring the Falls.
On Monday the woman’s husband said the family had hoped that she would have been found alive, despite reports that she had plunged to her death. According to reports, the woman did not indicate to her relatives that she was going to the location and only after she was reported missing that contact was made with them and they became aware that she had gone on such a tour. Persons on the flight said that she was crying and appeared to be distressed. Meanwhile, the ministry has expressed sympathy to the family of Sivanand and thanked all the officials and agencies that supported the work of the Guyana Police Force and the GDF during the search and recovery exercise.
