Sex worker remanded for larceny of cellphone, cash and jewellery

SELF-confessed sex-worker Tomaica Kush of Sophia, Greater Georgetown, appeared yesterday before city Magistrate Ann McLennan, accused of stealing from Saied Harrinarine three gold chains worth $90,000, a diamond band worth $80,000, a gold ring worth $40,000 and his Blackberry cellular phone worth $20,000, on August 18 at North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

The 19-year-old Kush was not required to plead to the charge of larceny. However, when the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was applied, the defendant strongly denied the charge.

Questioned by the magistrate about whether she had previously been charged, Kush replied in the negative; but asked about her occupation, she at first described herself as a businesswoman, before being asked to be more specific.
“Madam, I does pick fair fuh money,” she explained.

The courtroom became quiet as Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones related the facts to the court.
Jones explained that the victim, a taxi driver, had on the day in question picked up the defendant at Lisa Guesthouse and took her to Sherriff Street. When the woman reached her destination, she relieved Harrinarine of the said jewellery and demanded that he hand over his cellular phone.

The woman then ran out of the car with the articles, alleging that he had “fared her and did not want to pay her for the services.”

The court heard that when the matter was reported to the police and Kush was arrested, some of the articles were found in her possession.

After his lengthy explanation, Jones disclosed that investigations are still incomplete.

He did not object to bail for the defendant, but bail was refused and the matter was transferred to Magistrate Alex Moore’s court for August 31.
