Traffic Chief appeals to road-users

FOLLOWING recent road fatalities, acting Traffic Chief Dion Moore is appealing to all road-users, especially drivers, to reduce speed and exercise courtesy.He is also calling on drivers to use commonsense, while urging passengers to speak out when drivers are speeding.

The Superintendent of Police noted that under his watch the Police Traffic Department have stepped up their game with impromptu enforcement campaigns across the country, in an effort to clamp down on the lawlessness on the roads.

Moore disclosed that for this year they have tallied 77 deaths from 63 road accidents, while for the corresponding period in 2014 they had recorded 80 deaths from 73 accidents.

Regarding serious accidents, there are 309 for this year so far and last year there were 231; damage-accidents were 505 in 2015 and 519 last year, during the corresponding period.

Among the categories of road-users killed in road accidents this year, pedestrians topped the list with 27, while there were six pedal cyclists, 10 motor cyclists, three pillion riders, 10 drivers and 16 passengers.

The Guyana Police Force Traffic Department made 1,042 cases from January to date in 2015, with 14,240 cases alone for speeding.
