HUNDREDS of Essequibians, mostly women, have threatened to take to the streets with protest action if the governing APNU/AFC coalition discontinues the $10,000 “Because We Care” education grant to schoolchildren which was started by the PPP/C Government.Residents who attended the face-the-community meetings held by the Region 2 Administration at Lima Sands and Golden Fleece Estate told Regional Chairman Mr. Devanand Ramdatt and Vice Chairperson Ms. Nandranie Coonjah that they are frustrated by the move announced by the governing APNU/AFC coalition to discontinue the education grant.
One resident told the chairman that the move by the Government and Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, is a big injustice to poor people, and he cannot understand why children are being denied a little financial help to pursue their education.
Other residents said the education grant assisted them in many ways to send their children to school. They said the new Government must continue to assist children with the grant.
