JUSTICE Roxane George yesterday began presiding over a manslaughter trial at the Demerara Assizes in which Bramanand Singh, called ‘Daro’, is accused of unlawfully killing his father, Mansa Singh.Singh has pleaded not guilty and is being represented by Attorney-at-law, Ms Sonia Pariag.
Prosecutrix Ms Shawnett Austin told the jury in her opening address that evidence will be led to prove that the accused, his wife and father, lived at 51 Stewartville, West Coast Demerara.
According to the prosecutrix, witnesses will testify that during the evening of January 27th 2005, the accused and the deceased had a confrontation and the following morning, Mansa was discovered dead under the house.
The prosecutrix said that the state has set out to prove that between Thursday 27th and 28th January, 2005, at 51 Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, Singh unlawfully killed his father, Mansa Singh.
She went on to tell the jury: “You will hear evidence that on the 28th February, 2005, a report was made to the police. A party of policemen visited the house at Lot 51 Stewartville, WCD, where the body of Mansa Singh was found lying on the concrete in the yard. The body was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and later to the Lyken Funeral Parlour.
“On Monday the 31st January, 2005, a post-mortem examination was performed by Dr Nehaul Singh on the body of Mansa Singh and the cause of death was given as a ruptured spleen and liver, due to multiple, blunt traumas to chest and abdomen.
“The accused was later arrested, charged and indicted for the offence of manslaughter.”
However, the prosecutrix warned the jury not to consider evidence from any other source but the sworn testimonies of the witnesses.
Gossip and press reports are not to be considered, she emphasised.
