Boxing to return to Linden next month … Austin, Dorway to clash for middleweight title

BOXING is to return to Linden next month, when a Pro Am card, put together by Pocket Rocket/Mark De Freitas Productions present East versus West in South (Linden) on July 18 where there will be a rematch for the light middleweight title of Guyana between champion Mark Austin and challenger Gladwin Dorway, while Linden’s Cassius Matthews will take on Keshawn Simon.

A female scrap is also on the card between Avlon Scott and Sharon Warde, while there will also be four amateur fights involving boxers from Linden, Berbice and Georgetown.
Orlan Rogers of the Pocket Rocket Gym is the matchmaker for the card. He explained that in 2012 Austin gained a points decision against Dorway and in 2013 Matthews came away with a points win over Simon and the losers are seeking to come out on top this time around.
Meanwhile, Rogers who had moved his gym to Berbice is now back in Linden and intends to have the gym become a force coming out of Linden.
He said that on July 3 there will be an exhibition at the Linden/Georgetown Bus Park in Linden where several young boxers will be featured.
Rogers said that his intention is to approach the Ministry of Education to incorporate the sport at schools.
He is to also seek the assistance from the Ministry of Sport and will be approaching the president of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, for help and a recommendation so that he can make his plans known to the Education Ministry.
He said that he has already attracted young boxers from the Victory Valley, South Road and Christianburg areas but would need support to establish his gym again.
To this end, Rogers will be actively pursuing a venue where he can set up his gym and take care of boxing, a sport he loves so dearly.
