Lion Mountain accident claims five lives

INVESTIGATIONS are ongoing into the reported deaths of five persons who perished recently in a vehicular accident at Lion Mountain, in the north western Cuyuni-Mazaruni area of Region Seven. While the identities of the deceased persons have not been disclosed to this publication, reports state that the driver of the truck in which they were being transported has been admitted to the Suddie Hospital in Essequibo with severe injuries. The driver whose name was given as Gaskin Williams is said to be nursing multiple injuries about the body, and several fractured ribs.
Reports reaching Guyana Chronicle indicated that the miners were employees of businessman Alfro Alphonso, and were transporting fuel to their mining location when the accident occurred.
According to reports, some seventeen persons were aboard the vehicle when it toppled, injuring some of the passengers and leaving five dead. Attempts yesterday to contact businessman Mr. Alphonso for a further update proved futile. (Alex Wayne)
