FORMER President Bharrat Jagdeo has emphasised and reassured supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) that, “we are not going to abandon our base in the struggle; we will fight tooth and nail to ensure that we are not cheated.”Speaking at a press conference at the Party’s headquarters, Freedom House, last night, former President Jagdeo said that he understands how the PPP/C supporters are feeling at this time, and assured them that the party will do everything in their power to fight the current situation.
“We are not going to abandon our base in the struggle, regardless of what happens; we are going to protect the interest of our people because we know that the APNU+AFC (A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change) will be vindictive,” Jagdeo said.
He urged PPP/C supporters to be calm and act in a dignified manner and not be provoked. “They will try to humiliate people; they will try to do all sorts of things, but we are not abandoning our base; we will continue to struggle to make sure our rights are protected,” he said, adding:
“In spite of these provocations with people driving around taunting people, and showing up to their homes and threatening them; the shooting off guns in celebration… because it is happening, and we have received numerous reports of this happening.”
Continuing on the same note, the former President stated that, “our people need to act in a calm manner and a dignified manner – do not be provoked by these people.”
And giving some insight into incidents that took place he noted that guns were being used in celebration outside Stabroek Market. He noted this is not the Middle East. “We are a civilized country; and this should not be.”
DISCREPANCIES
According to Jagdeo, “There are too many things that are happening that are not coincidental, patterns are emerging and if now and in the future once we find that there are irregularities surrounding the outcome of these elections are correct we will expose it here and internationally and everywhere that it matters because we are gathering enough evidence now to prove that there are discrepancies surrounding GECOM’s (Guyana Elections Commission) pronouncement.”
Concluding his remarks, Jagdeo assured the supporters of the PPP/C that, “I know many are disappointed but they must understand that the leadership of the PPP/C will not abandon them, we will fight tooth and nail to ensure that we are not cheated.”
