SINCE 1992 the political Opposition has found grounds on which to question the results of General and Regional elections. As recent as 2001, the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) secured another win at the polls and again the results were questioned by the People’s National Congress (PNC). The street violence soon followed. Indo-Guyanese commuters passing through Buxton etc. were targeted. Roads are dug up to slow/stop traffic and other upsets followed.
The election result is contested in court by a PNC supporter, Veronica Delph. The then Chief Justice dismissed the election petition on the basis that it was ‘flawed and insupportable’.
Unfortunately, it only led to more violence on the streets. Pictured are police ranks positioned on the public road, in an effort to support the maintenance of law and order.
