WINNERS of the inaugural Georgetown Dominoes Association (GDA)-organised international tournament were all presented with their spoils from the competition that was held over the Easter weekend. The simple but auspicious ceremony was held on Wednesday evening at the GDA’s South Ruimveldt headquarters.
With teams coming from the USA, Canada and several Caribbean territories, it was the Guyanese club ‘Rage’ that pocketed the tournament’s US$5 000 first prize.
Second-place finishers ‘Specialist’ collected US$2 500, while Spartan the Gladiators were third (US$1 500) and Dream Team fourth (US$1 000).
Despite being on a team that finished outside of the top four, Kanhai Samaroo was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP), winning a maximum of 18 games.
President of the GDA, Fay Joseph, said that the success of the tournament was a ‘dream come true’, adding that the support shown by clubs and ardent fans of the game has set a platform for others to emulate.
Joseph has promised that the next tournament will be bigger and better and she made a call to corporate Guyana to support the event.
“I think we’ve shown that dominoes is more than just a pastime game and can be played at a big stage and could be lucrative. We wish that corporate entities would support us next year,” said Joseph, who funded the entire tournament.
