Security guard jailed, fined for threatening, assaulting ‘wife’

A SECURITY guard was yesterday jailed and fined by city Magistrate Annette Singh for threatening to kill his common-law wife and for unlawfully assaulting her. Mark Singh, 40, of Lot 150 Regent Road, Bourda, Georgetown, pleaded guilty to that charge that said on Wednesday, March 11 at the same address, he unlawfully assaulted Sujata Persaud.

He also accepted that on the same day at Lot 150 Regent Street, Bourda, he used threatening language to Persaud, thereby occasioning a breach of the peace.
According to Police Prosecutor Adduni Innis, Persaud is the mother of Singh’s three children. She informed the court that Singh was recently released from prison for a similar offence, since he had been convicted and sentenced to six months for a matter with Persaud.
The prosecutor related that on the day in question, Singh went to their apartment and after an altercation, he picked up his boots and dealt the woman several lashes about her body. He also threatened to kill Persaud and the matter was reported.
Persaud told the court that she does not want anything to do with Singh.
The unrepresented man told the court: “Meh sorry, it nah go happen next time. I just come out of prison.”
The magistrate responded: “Six months in jail for a similar charge and you’re still here. The prison is not working out for you.” She advised Persaud about the protection measures which she could apply for if she desires.
Singh complained that they are living in an apartment by Persaud’s aunt who intervenes in their relationship. He added that Persaud does work for her aunt, who pays her only $1000 per week.
Magistrate Singh responded that, “You need to work more so that she [Persaud] does not have to work.”.
He was sentenced to two months imprisonment for the assault charge, and as it relates to the threatening charge, he was fined $10,000. He was ordered to pay the fine in one week, failing which he will have to spend one month in prison.
