ALLEGED drug mule Nancy Augustus of Lot 40 Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara was yesterday refused bail by Magistrate Judy Latchman when she pleaded not guilty to a drug trafficking charge detailing that on March 6, at Cross Street, Georgetown, she had in her possession 2 grammes of cocaine for the purpose.Police Prosecutor Renetta Bentham told the court that Augustus was confronted by police at her home. As Augustus saw the ranks, she threw the substance on the ground, which, upon inspection, the police found to be suspected cocaine.
She was taken to the Brickdam Police Station, where the retrieved substance was weighed in her presence and amounted to two grammes.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Adrian Thompson, who represented Augustus, told the court that his client was not found with the illicit drug in her possession, and that she does not reside at the Cross Street address where the substance was allegedly found.
He noted that Augustus was asked by a family member to go to the police station and claim the money which was allegedly found with the cocaine. He added that when Augustus arrived at the station she was arrested and charged.
However, the mother of two was remanded to prison after the prosecutor opposed bail on grounds of the nature and seriousness of the offence, and the penalty attached. The matter will be called again on March 12.
