Rice farmer accused of stealing $2.5M in jewellery from mother-in-law

A RICE famer accused of stealing $2.5M in jewellery from his mother-in-law during a break-in was yesterday made to post bail in the sum of $200,000 when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry.Kemraj Ramcharran from Anna Regina denied the charge which read that on Thursday, January 8 at Cotton Field, Essequibo, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Lynette Naipaul and stole therein 11 gold hand bands, 2 gold rings, 4 gold chains with pendants along with 6 gold earrings, a total value of $2.5 million, being the property of the same Lynette Naipaul.
It is also alleged that on the same date and place he stole over $2.9M in gold jewellery, property of Serojine Seecoomarie.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that on the said day at about 11:00hrs, the defendant visited his mother-in-law’s home and left. At about 03:00hrs Naipaul awoke on hearing a strange noise and then she saw someone jumping through the window and raised an alarm. Upon checking her house she discovered the said articles missing.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police, who acting on information, arrested and charged Ramcharran.
The prosecutor informed the court that the defendant admitted to being in the house but denied stealing the articles, which were never recovered.
The prosecutor did not object to bail on the condition that the defendant reports to the C.I.D. officer attached to Anna Regina Police Station every Friday. The farmer has to return to court on January 20.
