THE ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is expected to meet with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) soon, according to General Secretary, Mr Clement Rohee.

At the Party’s weekly press conference yesterday at Freedom House, on Robb Street, he disclosed that several issues for discussion have been identified and a date and time for a meeting has been proposed.
He said too that a letter detailing the issues at reference will be dispatched shortly to the Commission.
The proposed meeting follows an indication from President Donald Ramotar, in early December, that Guyana will be heading to early elections in 2015, after just three years since the last general and regional elections.
Meanwhile, GECOM’s Deputy Chief Elections Officer (DCEO), Mr Vishnu Persaud, in a recent telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle, stressed that the Commission has an “open-door policy” where engaging with stakeholders is concerned.
“GECOM has, and will, continue to respond favourably to request from stakeholders for meetings with the Commission,” he said.
When asked about meetings with political Parties to date, Persaud disclosed that GECOM has only met with A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) so far.
He reiterated that the Commission, “as a matter of norm,” has always made itself available to stakeholders, and will continue to do so, particularly as Guyana faces impending general and regional elections.
Once a proclamation announcing a date for early elections is made by the President, constitutionally, GECOM has three months within which to deliver. The last general and regional elections were held in November 2011.
