The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will this afternoon bring down the curtain on activity for 2014 when the DDL/Pepsi Under-16 competition is staged at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis gym in Albouystown. It is expected to attract boxers from around the country and will punch off from 13:00hrs. At a launching held on Friday at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, GBA Technical and Tournament Director Terrence Poole said that over 30 fighters would be participating with James Walcott’s Harpy Eagles Gym set to have the largest contingent.
Poole noted that the Under-16 tournaments have already started to bear fruits as several boxers have graduated to representing Guyana at overseas events. He noted that the importance of having a solid nursery cannot be over emphasised and thanked DDL for its unwavering support.
DDL has been sponsoring the tournament for the third consecutive year and Pepsi Brand Executive Larry Wills assured that his company will continue to support. According to Wills, his company has noted the continuous improvement in the organization of the event.
“DDL loves to give back to the community and this is one way of doing such,” Willis said. Meanwhile, GBA President Steve Ninvalle announced that the Champion of Champions competition scheduled for December 20 and 21 has been postponed to next month.
