Teenage bandits terrorise Montrose businesswoman, flee with eggs

A MONTROSE, East Coast Demerara businesswoman was on Monday terrorised by three teenage bandits when they invaded her home and business place from the nearby canefield.

The woman’s relatives who asked that her name not be mentioned told this newspaper that just after 13:00hrs, she was at home when the three young men crossed a trench bordering her property at Montrose Railway Embankment and the canefield.
The relative disclosed that one of bandits who had what appeared to be a gun and the other two with no visible weapons forced her into her house after gaining access to her property.
The woman’s husband who spoke with this newspaper related that only two of the bandits wore masks. According to him, they began pushing the woman around the house and slapping her repeatedly as they demanded cash and jewellery.
The woman who was traumatised handed the men an undisclosed amount of cash, and several thousand dollars worth in jewellery, even as they continued ransacking the home.
After receiving the items from the woman the men fled the scene with a computer issued by the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) Programme, a mobile phone and several eggs from the family’s poultry business. The woman’s very upset husband told the Chronicle that he believes the men timed him and pounced on his wife while he was not home.
The men spent approximately twenty minutes in the home and based on the woman’s account in relating the matter to the police, they seemed nervous and anxious to flee the home. The woman did not seek medical attention for her few lacerations which according to her husband was nothing too serious.
The police were informed of the robbery by the man who was on his way home when his wife called him and he picked up police from the Sparendaam Police Station who went to the house and began their investigations.
The police then carried out searches in at least two adjoining communities and arrested one man who fit the description of one of the three who the woman identified as being part of the robbery. Up to late yesterday the young man was in police custody assisting with the police investigations.
