Region 3 Chairman vows continued action against illegal vending

THE Ministry of Public Works has developed an integral role in assisting Region 3 (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) regarding the relocation of illegal roadside vendors plaguing the various areas.

This is according to Regional Chairman Julius Faerber in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle on Thursday.
He underscored that the Region is always in a constant battle to rid the roadways in many areas of the rather stubborn vendors.
Faerber admitted that the situation of vendors selling illegally on road corners is indeed unmanageable.
He said the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) is working with the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development and now the Public Works Ministry to take strong action to have those persons removed.
Faerber added that areas most plagued by illegal roadside vending are Vreed-en-Hoop, Parika and Patentia.
In previous interviews with this publication, Faerber had said that swift and condign action would have been taken against market vendors who conduct business outside the Parika market tarmac.
The Chairman said that although numerous written exhortations had been delivered to those vendors, and they had been given spots on the market tarmac, they persist with this illegal practice, refusing to occupy the spots given them.
“Numerous letters were given to them. We had served the notices on a number of occasions, informing them to remove, while spots in the market were being prepared for them,” he highlighted.
The vendors are still reluctant to take up those spots and keep making up a number of excuses not to move there.
The chairman had declared that the authorities will see to it that they go into the markets, as they will not be allowed to sell on the road shoulders.
He concluded that the market has enough space to accommodate everyone.
