Hunt, who performed maintenance and security services at Bourda Market, was a mute, according to relatives.
Speaking with this newspaper via telephone from a private hospital in Georgetown, businessman Sanjay Persaud, who is alleged to have been driving the car, said that he was proceeding along Lamaha Street on Wednesday night, when Hunt, who was riding in the opposite direction between Middleton and De Abreu Streets, was struck by a car which slammed into a utility pole.
However, another eyewitness on security duty in the area told the Chronicle that the City Council employee was riding in the same direction as the car, and was struck from behind.
The businessman told this newspaper that he called the police after the accident and waited for them to arrive before he removed from the scene.
However, police sources are disputing this, stating that the man left the scene before police ranks could have arrived, and checked himself into a private room at a private hospital, causing ranks to be unable to access him to perform a breathalyser test.
One other eyewitness recalled that following the accident, she exited her vehicle since she was in the vicinity and she could smell liquor as she saw the driver of the red sports vehicle staggering and slurring his words. It was concluded that the man was under the influence.
Yesterday when this newspaper showed up at the Kitty Police Station, which is dealing with the matter, the relative of the deceased explained that they received the news of the death from a caller. He said that they were informed that Hunt was involved in an accident and he was dead.
The man said that Hunt has no children, no wife and has been living at his home for the past 15 years. After giving a statement to the police at the Kitty Police Station yesterday, the relative and another female were escorted to the vehicle of the businessman’s wife who was reportedly taking them to speak with the businessman at the hospital.
Asked if there would be a settlement in relation to the matter, the relative of the deceased said that he is not sure but he has the impression that it could be the reason the woman was waiting to take him to the businessman. The businessman’s wife also could not say if there would be a settlement in the matter.
The vehicle which the businessman was driving was parked on top of a tow truck at the Kitty Police Station yesterday morning.
The left front side of the car was badly damaged and the windscreen was broken. The registration number plates for the car had been removed.
