Rohee says no-confidence motion driven by ‘desperation and rejection’

THE Central Committee of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) met last Friday, the party’s General-Secretary Clement Rohee told the media yesterday and the combined Opposition’s attempts to destabilise the current administration was high on the agenda.“The Party discussed the current political situation in the country and expressed full confidence in its readiness to respond to any situation that may arise in light of the impending no-confidence motion by the AFC,” he said at a news conference at Freedom House.
“…the Party is convinced that the decision to proceed with a no-confidence motion is driven by desperation and rejection on the part of the Opposition, especially in view of the damaging revelations from the on-going Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry, the PNC Congress election rigging fiasco and the continuing failure of the Opposition parties to stymie the growth trajectory of the economy.”
Rohee added that the Central Committee also addressed the strengthening of the party’s electoral machinery and ensuring that both the National Register of Registrants (NRR) and the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) are thoroughly checked by party activists on the ground.
He noted too that the checks by party activists are aimed at ensuring that both the NRR and PLE include all eligible voters and at the same time ensure that there is no padding of the list by the inclusion of names that fail to meet the eligibility criteria.
“The Central Committee urged all activists, supporters and all Guyanese to be vigilant in protecting their right to vote and free and fair elections,” he said.
According to him, the Central Committee is of the view that the combined Opposition forces are ganging up to “blackmail the country” and “thwart” the country’s development agenda.
“The role of the Opposition media to influence and shape public opinion on the question of local government elections was condemned with a call for fair and unbiased media coverage, which must take into account the concerns of the major political stakeholder on the issue of Local Government Elections and General and Regional Elections, as well as GECOM’s readiness to conduct any of the two elections in a fair and transparent manner,” he said.
The General-Secretary stated that despite the challenges, the meeting ended with a “resounding re-affirmation” by the Central Committee to work towards a decisive victory for the Party whenever elections are held.
Rohee added that presentations made by President Donald Ramotar and himself set the tone for discussions on the way forward for the party.
