Accused charged for embezzlement, giving false information on $700,000 bail

A 29-year-old employee of Marketing and Distribution Inc was yesterday ordered to post a sum of $700,000 bail on embezzlement and giving false information charges.

Rayon Nurse of Lot 374 Shernor, West Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the giving false information charge, but was not required to plead to three embezzlement charges.
Details of the first charge alleged that on Monday June 13 at Georgetown, being employed as a clerk or servant at Marketing and Distribution Inc. he fraudulently embezzled the sum of $2M from Sheliza Deonauth taken into his possession for Marketing and Distribution Inc.
The second charge stated that on the same day at Georgetown, being employed as a clerk or servant at Marketing and Distribution Inc. he fraudulently embezzled the sum of $2M taken from Suresh Deonauth taken into his possession for Marketing and Distribution Inc.
The third offence said on that day, he also fraudulently, embezzled the sum of $4.76M from Mohamed Khan taken it into his possession for Marketing and Distribution Inc.
Details of the fourth charge said on June 13 at Georgetown, he gave false information to Constable Jason Kyte, a public officer, intending thereby to cause the said officer and other ranks to conduct an investigation, which he would not have done, had he known the true statements.
Police Inspector Steven Telford, prosecuting, objected to bail because of the seriousness of the offence and also on the ground, that since he was employed with the company for several years, he may tamper with the witnesses.
The accused was represented by Attorney-at-law Mr. James Bond. He said his client was admired by his superiors for his hard work and integrity. Nurse was employed with the company for about 10 years and never misplaced a cent.
Bond said his client is the sole breadwinner of his family and this fact should assure the court that he is not a flight risk.
The lawyer argued that his client is saying yes, he did collect the money from the mentioned persons on behalf of the company, but while he was transporting the money he was robbed. He added that in relation to giving false information charge, the police decided that as a result of the situation they tossed this charge to his client.
He explained that even certain damages was done to his vehicle and begged that these are bailable offences and as such his client has the right to be granted bail. In those circumstances, he asked that Nurse be admitted to reasonable bail which does not reflect the quantum of the charges.
However, prosecutor Telford informed the court that the investigations are not fully completed.
He was ordered to report to Brickdam Police Station every Friday until the completion of the matters and case will continue on July 28.
