Frustrated man to serve prison time for assaulting, threatening ex-paramour

LENNOX Cort of Lot 1717 East Street, Georgetown was on Friday sentenced to 14 months’ imprisonment by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond for unlawfully and maliciously wounding his ex-paramour, Rishana Semple, on May 25, 2014, at East Street, Georgetown, and for threatening her on the same day, whereby a breach of the peace may be occasioned.

Police Corporal Jomo Nichols, prosecuting, said that Semple and Cort had been involved in a relationship for two years. On the day in question, at around 17:30 hrs, Semple visited Cort at his home, they had a misunderstanding, and he dealt her several cuffs to her body.

She managed to run out of the house, but he followed her and threw her down the stairway. In the yard, he hit her to the left side of her head with a brick, causing her to receive injuries behind her left ear.

Cort then threatened to kill Semple, but she managed to obtain refuge in the neighbour’s yard. She then reported the matter to the police, and received medical attention at the hospital.

Having initially pleaded not guilty to the charges, Cort changed his plea and accepted guilt for the offences. He told the court he was sorry for his actions, and explained that he had been frustrated at the time.

It was discovered that Cort had previously been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment on a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm, and he had also served 12 months’ imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody.

He was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment on each of the charges, but the sentences will run concurrently.
