CLEMENT James, a farmer of Central Rupununi facing a drug trafficking charge, was remanded to prison on Monday when he appeared before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, in Georgetown. He pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on Sunday, May 11 at Yellow Shop, Karasabai, he had 42 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose.
Police Corporal, Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said, that day around 02:40 hrs, ranks on patrol in Central Rupununi observed the defendant acting in a suspicious manner.
A search was carried out on his person and the illegal substance was found in his left-side pants pocket.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail on the ground that the defendant did not provide the court with any special reason for the grant of pre-trial freedom.
Consequently, James will have to remain incarcerated until he, too, makes his next appearance at Lethem Court, in Rupununi on June 2.
