RAJIV Ramroop (no address given) was refused bail last Monday when he appeared before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, on two charges of break and enter and larceny. He pleaded not guilty to both, one of which said that on Thursday, May 8, at Leguan Island, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Tulsie Persaud also called Pandit and stole one pink mini music box and $40,000 cash, together valued $43,000.
The other allegation said that on May 5 at Enterprise, Long Road, in Leguan, too, he broke and entered the dwelling of Christopher Anthony and stole one body spray, one perfume, three boxer shorts and $10,500 cash, among other items, all worth $40,000.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting said, on May 5 around 09:00 hrs, Anthony secured his home by the means provided but, on his return home, he noticed it had been broken into and the articles missing.
In relation to the other charge, Mangru said Persaud also locked up his house and left to conduct business. However, on his return, he discovered an eastern window broken and the defendant in the yard with the booty.
The defendant confessed that, two years ago, he was convicted of a similar offence but claimed, with the assistance of attorney-at-law, Ms. Latchmi Rahamat, that he had been set up by a young lady.
The prosecutor successfully opposed bail on the grounds of the seriousness and the prevalence of the offence and the fact that Ramroop was found in Persaud’s yard with stolen property.
He was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to Leguan Court for May 15.
