DOMESTIC violence in a 13-year-old marriage led to the deaths on Sunday night of 28-year-old Nadanie Mohan, also known as Michelle, and 31-year- old Vickram Ramdin, also known as Vickie, of 255 Section ‘D’ Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara.
The couple got married while Mohan was still sixteen but they had been going through an abusive relationship which has been engaging the attention of the courts.

Yesterday the Guyana Chronicle was informed that the couple was found dead in their home on Sunday night. The man reportedly strangled his wife before hanging himself in the same house which had been locked tight.
Police investigators are of the view that the man might have committed the tragic deed sometime between Saturday night and Sunday. Residents told this publication that the couple was last seen hugging each other under an umbrella as they walked out of the village on Saturday as the woman was leaving for work.
They also recalled not seeing the couple again and the entire day on Sunday the house remained closed while numerous but futile efforts were made by the parents and other relatives of the woman to contact them. It was then decided to visit the house where the gruesome discovery was made.
The Guyana Chronicle in discussion with residents in the area was told that the man who worked as a mason and carpenter was an easygoing person and one who always looked out for his children and wife. They surmised that it may have been “a real terrible thing” that the woman might have done to cause him to commit such a tragic deed.

This newspaper was reliably informed that the woman on two occasions informed the court that she no longer wished to provide evidence against her husband after she took him to court over abuse. Incidentally the two were to appear in court yesterday over a matter pertaining to abuse.

Yesterday’s matter would have dealt with a probation report since the woman had indicated to the court that she was not willing to continue pressing charges against her husband.
Reporters were told of an incident in which the woman was forced to jump from the ten feet high veranda of their home after her husband had placed a knife to her throat, threatening to kill her.
That incident was also reported to the police and the woman later asked that the charge be dropped. Speaking with Michelle’s mother, she said that her daughter never wanted to have the man sentenced to jail as she would usually recall that she has been married to him since she was 16 and she and the children would grieve if that should happen.
According to the woman she would usually sit and consider her daughter at times and wonder if a day would ever come when she would lose her at the hands of her abusive husband.
In recalling the tragedy on Sunday, the woman said that she had been trying to make contact with her daughter that day but was getting no response. She said that she telephoned her daughter eight times but got no response, so she eventually went to sleep. She awoke at approximately 18 hours that afternoon and when she realised that her daughter did not return any of her calls she and some relatives decided to visit the home.
It was there that they found the door locked and the couple’s 11-year-old son took a piece of wood and began hitting the flooring of the house, calling for his parents to wake up but there was no response. They then asked persons in the neighbourhood if the two had been seen for the day, and after being told no, a decision was taken to kick in the door of the house and there the gruesome discovery was made.
The woman was said to be lying on the floor between two beds while the man’s body was swinging from a rafter in the home. The police were called in.
According to reports, the man seemed reluctant to work and whenever he had a job, he would usually dig holes around the yard and hide his money rather than give it to the woman for the maintenance of the household and the children. He was even accused of cutting the gas bottle connection to the stove, causing the woman to be unable to cook for the family.
