Minister Baksh inspects new sluice to boost farming
MINISTER within the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Alli Baksh, while on a recent visit to Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), inspected a new sluice that was constructed on the Charity River Defence Dam to boost drainage in the area that is earmarked for township status.
The sluice was constructed by the Agriculture Ministry, through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and the Region 2 administration.
Minister Baksh was accompanied by Permanent Secretary in the Agriculture Ministry, Mr. George Jarvis; Regional Chairman Mr. Parmanand Persaud; Regional Vice-Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo and NDIA Engineer, Mr. Jaffon Permansingh.
Baksh said the structure will boost the system in the Charity environs, especially the growing housing scheme.
According to him, the government’s focus is to enhance the drainage network in
communities so that excess rainfall water can be drained off the land as quickly as possible.
The new sluice was constructed in an area where an old one was located many years ago and water will be discharged from it to the Pomeroon River.
Residents of Charity said the addition will greatly assist them and have expressed thanks to the government for the project.
One farmer said it is further testimony to development that is taking place under the
People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government and farmers at Charity will also be able to cultivate more food for the nation.
