Duo remanded over stealing car and replacing number plate

TWO men charged with stealing a car and replacing the number plate at Adelphi Village were both refused bail by Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday.

Taxi driver Marvin Samaroo, 45, of Lot 10 Number 2 Village, East Canje Berbice; and mason Krishnadat Ganga, 24, who gave his address to the court as Lot 16 Phoenix Park, West Coast Demerara, were not required to enter a plea to the charge which stated that on Sunday, February 16 at Adelphi Village, East Canje, they stole motor car PPP 3149, property of Jonathan Ricknauth.
They pleaded not guilty to the second offence which said that between February 16 and 18 at East Canje, they both fraudulently placed number plate HC 3149 on motor car PPP 3149.
Police Corporal Dinero Jones, prosecuting, said Samaroo was previously convicted in Berbice. The prosecutor succeeded in objecting to the duo being granted pre-trail liberty, since the investigations are incomplete and there are other charges that are likely to be issued soon.
An investigation was ordered by Magistrate McLennan after Ganga complained that he was beaten and shocked to the scrotum by the police. Ganga who was standing in the dock lifted his right leg to indicate to the magistrate some of his injuries.
The unrepresented duo will make their next court appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on February 25.
