TROY Rampergass, 25, a labourer of Lot 229 Samatha Point, Grove, East Bank of Demerara, was put on $100,000 bail when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, yesterday, charged with break and enter.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge that, alleged, between November 17 and 18, 2013, at Samatha Point, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Adrian Profitt and stole one flat screen television valued $40,000.
Police Inspector Michael Grant, prosecuting, said the defendant and the other man are living in the same building but different apartments.
On November 17, around 21:20 hrs, Profitt secured his apartment by the means provided and went to bed but he awoke about 03:00 hrs the following morning and discovered his television set missing.
The prosecutor said, on November 19, Profitt caught the defendant trying to open his apartment door and they had a confrontation.
However, during the investigations, the defendant was questioned by police and promised to replace the television.
The prosecutor objected to bail, citing the nature and gravity of the offence and the fact that Rampergass was evading the police since November last and had only been apprehended last Sunday.
But the objection was overruled and the case was transferred to Providence Court, also on the East Bank of Demerara, for February 7.
