PARAM Persaud, 43, a minibus driver, of Lot 31 Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara was yesterday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by Magistrate Judy Latchman for dangerous driving.
He had previously appeared before Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, last August 29, and was not required to plea to the charge that said on May 24, at Houston Public Road, Greater Georgetown, he drove BKK 1948 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Helena Margaret Jones.
When the case was first called, Persaud was represented by attorney-at-law Mr. Gordon Gilhuys, who, in a bail application, had said Persaud is married with three children and is the sole breadwinner for his family and he was granted pre-trial freedom on $200,000 surety.
Subsequently, other attorney-at-law Mr. George Thomas, who made representation for Persaud during a trial in which he was convicted, requested that he be fined but the magistrate imposed the custodial penalty.
