Miner remanded on unlawful possession of gun charge

MINER William Simon, of Princeville, Village, Mahdia, Potaro, was remanded to prison on Monday last when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty, charged with unlawful possession of a firearm on Christmas Day.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge that said on Wednesday, December 25, at Lot 111 Mahdia, he had a 12-gauge single-barrelled shotgun, without being the holder of a licence.
Police Corporal Seon Blackman, prosecuting, informed the Court that two policemen saw the defendant passing by the Mahdia Station with a salt bag on his back and acting in a suspicious manner.
He said a search was carried out on him and the gun was found.
Successfully objecting to bail, the prosecutor cited the seriousness of the offence and the penalty attached.
Consequently, pre-trial freedom was refused and Simon has to make his next appearance on January 9.
