District Governor Herve Honore noted in his address that the Demerara Rotary tries daily to increase its services in all areas. He added that its core values include leadership, integrity, diversity, service and camaraderie.
Honore noted that the club provides good service projects and is committed to helping youths in the communities. He noted that the club is looking to increase its membership, and he described the club as one which involves its membership in activities beyond club attendance. He said there are 68 Rotary clubs in the district, and these exist to support Rotary foundations.
Club President Osbert James, congratulated the “visionary and dynamic” club on achievement of its 20th anniversary. The club, he said, was chartered in December 1993, and has distinguished itself by being the first Rotary club in Guyana to break the “men only” mould by admitting women into its membership.
James encouraged club members to pledge themselves to continue working — and that even harder — so that in 20 years time they would be celebrating bigger achievements.
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to sponsors who have given their unfaltering support to the organisation over the years.
Various members were awarded for their dedication and contributions to the club over the years, making it presently an accomplishment.
The president also reported that the club has projected itself as a leader in reaching out and improving the lives of others in communities outside of its immediate environs. The Demerara Rotary Club falls under the purview of the Georgetown Rotary Club.
Other items on the evening’s agenda included the Rotary Prayer, a brief history of the club, and tribute and toasts to the long life of the Rotary Club, besides presentation of awards to outstanding members.
A Rotary club is a local club of business and professional people belonging to a worldwide organisation of similar clubs, devoted to serving the community and promoting world peace.
