Blueberry Hill, Eagles register big wins as tournament opens

BLUEBERRY Hills crushed South Amelia’s Ward 6-1, while a hat-trick by Deon Charter enabled Eagles to record a 7-1 win against Coomacka when action in the Upper Demerara Football Association’s (UDFA)/Bankis Beer Christmas football tournament got under way at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground Wednesday night. In the first game following a colourful march past of the 14 teams in this first edition which is exclusively sponsored by beverage giant Banks DIH Limited, Blueberry Hill made light work of South Amelia’s Ward, trouncing them as Keron Noble opened the scoring in the 12th minute.
In what was an indication of the excitement to come for the entire evening in front of a large first-day crowd Blueberry Hill were able to hold that lead up to halftime. Five minutes after the second half began Anthony Paddy was able to level the scores for South Amelia’s Ward and a game was surely on.
However, by the 61st minute Malvin Benn gave Blueberry Hill the lead and other goals came from Ronnel Bristol in the 69th and 82nd, Gavin Morrison in the 78th and Marley Major a penalty in the 86th minute.
In the other game, striker Deon Charter was in a dangerous mood mincing his opponents time and again with mesmerising darts to goal.
This laid the platform for Eagles United to hammer Coomacka 7-1 eventually, as Deon Charter got goals in the 6th, 25th and 49th minutes while other goals came from Leonard Johnson in the 37th and 41st, Dillon Charter in the 82nd and Allister Johnson in the 88th, while the lone strike for Coomacka came from Darwin Daw in the 63rd minute.
If what took place in the opening matches in the inaugural championship is anything to go by, then football fans are in for a Christmas treat.
Among those at the opening were UDFA president Sharma Solomon, Guyana Football Federation president Christopher Matthias, Georgetown Football Association president Burnett, Outdoor Events manager of Banks DIH Mortimer Stewart. Banks DIH Public Communications Manager Troy Peters and Linden Branch Manager of Banks, Shondell Easton.
This competition continues next Tuesday at the MSC ground in Linden with another double-header.
