Stevedore upset Albouystown ‘A’ in Round of 16
… Sparta Boss also given marching orders
STEVEDORE Housing Scheme booked their place in the quarterfinals of this year’s sixth annual Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Futsal Football competition, when they defeated Albouystown ‘A’ 3-2 on penalty kicks at the National Cultural Centre tarmac last Thursday night.Stephen Dolphin opened the scoring for the victorious side in the 12th minute, before Shaka Jones nullified his goal on behalf of Albouystown ‘A’, with his 18th minute strike, forcing the game to be decided from the penalty spot. Stevedore came out on top by the aforementioned scoreline, to send their more illustrious opponents home.
In the first match of the night, Berlin Massive through a Devon Charles goal that was scored in the 7th minute, edged Globe Yard 1-0 and this was followed by the contest between Alexander Village and Hope Street-Tiger Bay, which the latter won 3-2 on penalty kicks, following a 1-1 deadlock at end of regulation time.
Sherman Anthony (20th) scored for Costello Housing Scheme in their game against Queen Street-Tiger Bay, for whom Deon Alfred had found the back of the net in the 15th minute, sending their game into penalty kicks to decide a winner, with Queen Street coming out on top 2-1.
California Square and 2011 champions Broad Street played to a 0-0 stalemate, but the latter won 3-2 on penalty kicks, while West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’ edged North Sophia 2-1, with Wendell Pedro (20th) and Randolph Wagner (22nd) scoring for the winners, after Kevin Frank had sent North Sophia into the lead with his 8th minute goal.
Island All-Stars continued their fairy tale run to reach the last eight, with a 1-0 victory over North East La Penitence, thanks to Yannick Peter’s 3rd minute goal, before sudden death penalty shootout was the order of the day to declare a winner between Albouystown ‘B’ and the much-fancied East La Penitence-Sparta Boss, which the former won.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested at the National Cultural Centre tarmac next Tuesday, while the final and third place contests will take place at the National Park one week from today.
Cash prizes totalling G$1M will be distributed to the various winners, with the top team taking home $500 000, with the second-, third- and fourth-placed teams taking home $300 000, $200 000 and $100 000 respectively along with trophies, while all the teams in the preliminary round will pocket $25 000, $20 000, $15 000 and $10 000 each, according to their placing.
Like the previous two years of the tournament, the winner will go on to represent Georgetown in the nationwide tournament, whose winner will represent Guyana in next year’s Caribbean ‘Guinness Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Football competition that is scheduled to be held in Trinidad and Tobago in June.
