Two matches set for Berbice today as multimillion dollar tournament gets hotter

TWO matches will be played at the #5 ground, West Coast Berbice as action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer multimillion dollar tournament gets hotter with each fixture.Slingerz Football Club of West Coast Demerara are down to face Cougars of New Amsterdam from 18:00hrs, while Georgetown’s Fruta Conquerors will take on Monedderlust, also of New Amsterdam, in the feature match from 20:00hrs.
Already, eight teams have been eliminated from the 32-team tournament which carries a first prize of $4M and a $2.5M second prize.
The eight teams are Essequibo, Houston Stars, Topp XX, Grove hi-Tech, Botofago, Beacon, Riddim Squad and Silver Shattas.
Essequibo were swamped 10-0 on the opening day of the tournament by defending champions Sunburst Camptown while on the same day, Topp XX went down 0-1 to Pele.
Four days later, Santos thrashed Houston Stars 10-1 and Alpha `The Hammer’ United nailed Grove Hi-Tech 8-1.
One week ago, Milerock edged Beacon 1-0 and Den Amstel got the better of Silver Shattas by a slim 3-2 margin.
Last Wednesday, Mahaica Determinators edged Riddim Squad, one of the teams favoured to reach at least the quarter-final round, 5-4, on penalty kicks after the two sides were locked 0-0 at the end of regulation and extra time.
On the same day (Wednesday), Guyana Defence Force brushed aside Botofago by a 6-1 margin mainly through a hat-trick of goals off the boots of Desford Williams.
Seon Prince, Jehu Brewley and Delwyn Fraser also scored one goal apiece for the soldiers.
Yannick Simon netted Botofago’s lone goal from the penalty spot.
Two matches were scheduled for yesterday at the Buxton Community Centre ground.
BV/Triumph were down to face Georgetown Football Club and Home side Buxton United to meet Seawall United.
The tournament will continue next Wednesday with a double-header at the GFC ground.
Northern Rangers will meet Black Pearl from 18:00hrs and Net Rockers will face Flamingo from 20:00hrs.
