AS part of a continuous effort to reach out to the less fortunate people during the festive season, the Salvation Army – New Amsterdam Corps launched their annual Christmas appeal at the New Amsterdam Market square, on Saturday amidst calls for greater financial assistance to serve the growing number of underprivileged persons in the community.
In the sweltering mid-morning heat, Captain Ernest Gachelin described the Christmas season as one where the Gospel of Jesus is shared with all humanity through the power of the Holy Spirit and, also a time where the Salvation Army reaches out to the elderly, needy and hopeless persons.
“Once again, it is the Christmas season – a time of sharing and a time of love; among us are many unfortunate people who need or help and for over 100 years, the Salvation Army has been serving such needs which was made possible through your (the public) generous donations,” he reminded passersby.
The Corps Leader remained adamant that there has been an increase in the number of needy persons that the organisation serves and is calling for further public support.
“We appeal to you the community to support us either by way of cash or cheque, so that we will continue to serve the less fortunate people,” he pleaded.
Members of the public were entertained by musicians of the Council of Friends of New Amsterdam (COFONA) Band and a medley of carols by members of the N/A Corps of the Salvation Army; among the popular carols that livened the atmosphere, were: ‘Hark! the herald’ and ‘O come all ye faithful’.
Following the official launching, several member of the public took the opportunity to extend their gesture in support of the Christmas Appeal.
