Suspected bandit injured in shootout with cop

A MAN who allegedly attempted to rob a couple in Queenstown on Saturday was shot and injured during an exchange of gunfire with a plainclothes cop who intervened.The suspected robber, who has been identified as Jamal Cromwell, 20, of Tucville, Georgetown, is now under guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Police said in a release that about 18:30 hours on Saturday, a plain- clothes police rank observed a man walking behind a couple in the vicinity of Anira and Irving Streets, Queenstown.
The cop, suspecting that a robbery was about to take place, intervened and challenged the suspicious character, who pulled out a firearm and opened fire on the policeman.
The policeman returned fire but the suspect managed to escape on a motorcycle driven by a waiting accomplice.
However, around 20:30 hours, the suspect went to the GPHC for treatment for a gunshot injury to his finger on his left hand, and the police were informed. The suspect is under guard at the hospital.
