CHIEF Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday fined a Colombian national $30,000 for entering Guyana illegally. Through an interpreter, the defendant, July Caterine Ramirez pleaded guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, last February 21 at Lethem, Rupununi, she entered the country, by crossing a land frontier and failed to present herself to the nearest immigration officer.
Ramirez said she came to Guyana to cook but, when the magistrate enquired if she has a work permit, she responded in the negative but said her intention was to do it for her husband who lives here.
The woman was given an alternative of three months imprisonment.
