Accused $100,000 chain snatcher remanded until December 16

LABOURER Seon Deonard, 21, was charged yesterday with snatching a gold chain and remanded to prison.

After he pleaded not guilty to the larceny, before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said he was found with the jewel in his mouth.
The prosecutor said he had grabbed the $100,000 booty, in Croal Street, also in Georgetown, on November 20, off the neck of Akeemo Anthony.
The prosecutor said Anthony was travelling in a Route 47 minibus when Deonard dismounted his bicycle, snatched the chain and made good his escape, abandoning the bike and his shoes.
But after the victim raised an alarm police in plain clothes were able to chase and apprehend the snatcher in Hadfield Street and took him to Brickdam Police Station where Anthony’s property was recovered.
When the Chief Magistrate enquired of the defendant, who had previously said he lived in Alberttown, he declared he did not know.
He was then sent on remand until December 16.
