THE Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Regional Administration in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) and the Department of Health, hosted a health fair at Anna Regina Car Park, last Friday, to mark World Diabetic Day.

Educator and nurse attached to the Diabetic Foot Centre at Suddie Hospital, Ms. Shareshmie Nankoo said the objective was to make citizens more aware about diabetes and its complications.
She said other health professionals, including Dr. Yuli Permansingh of Charity Hospital and medical intern at Suddie Hospital, Ms. Shauretta Dowling were on hand to provide information and materials to persons interested in knowing more about the non-communicable disease that has been on the increase in Guyana.
Nankoo said special services that included foot screening, blood sugar testing, blood pressure testing, physiotherapy and medication were provided to persons in attendance.
She said the team provided, as well, education on diet, type one diabetes and wound care management and tee shirts, bags and pamphlets were distributed also.
According to the diabetes educator, diet and exercise are two main areas that are lacking in people’s daily lives throughout Guyana.

He said the focus of Government is to provide free health care and services for every citizen of the country.
