– four arrested, two on the run
THE Guyana Police Force has arrested four men following the discovery of a large quantity of ammunition (271 rounds 7.62 x 39), as well as three AK47 rifle magazines and a telescopic night vision lens.
The discovery was made during a drug eradication operation by police ranks in the community of Ituni, fifteen miles into the “Backdam”.
The police related that during the operation, 10 fields comprising approximately 5,000 cannabis sativa (marijuana) plants were discovered.
The police stated that the plants measured between 1 to 7 feet in height and were destroyed along with three camps which served as the suspected shelter for those operating the fields. According to the police, they came under fire while conducting the operation and returned fire.
It was also stated that during the operation, four men were arrested and two are still on the run.
The Guyana Chronicle was informed that although the operation took place in the Police ‘F’ Division, the ranks from that division were not part of the operation although being familiar with the area.
The operation was carried out by ranks from the Criminal Investigation Department in Georgetown.
