I remember talking to a fellow teacher who worked in Jamaica about an infant contracting HIV as a result of sexual molestation from a family member. In that case, the five year old contracted AIDS because as the demonic Jamaican AIDS cure theory goes: “You have sex with a virgin and you will be cured of your illness.” Very much convinced of this bizarre folklore belief, an AIDS-stricken uncle decided to try out that “Jamaican AIDS Cure Culture” on his five-year- old niece. The infant contracted the disease.
Now, that uncle was subsequently charged and that matter was brought to trial. Like most crime-addicted families, they rushed to the defence of the depraved uncle and castigated the child on the grounds that she was in the habit of touching her uncle inappropriately-the usual excuse, “she asked for it.” They even went so far as to accuse the little child of promiscuity. Promiscuity! Now, that is the big lie the doctor exposed when she testified in court that under no circumstances can a child at such a tender age be held accountable for a promiscuous act. It just cannot happen. Instead of that uncle being there to provide care and protection for his little niece, he was exploiting her childhood innocence in sick, sadistic acts. These are pointed questions the defence could not answer which prompted the presiding judge to hand down a life sentence for the adult uncle.
Fast forward to the Guyanese scene and little Kimanie Watson and we get a similar picture. Here we have a sex-crazed youngster who would usually try out his deviancy on his two-year old niece. Mark my words-“usually try out his deviancy”, because I am absolutely sure this was not the first time he tried this dastardly act on that niece; if this is the story they would have us believe, then he would’ve been the unluckiest criminal deviant in history.
I vehemently reject even the slightest hint in that convoluted defence. Things of that nature do not happen in isolation or should I say a one-time affair; that youngster has done it before and most likely was shielded by the same family members many times over. You do not get up one day and decide that you want to become a deviant and then “accidentally” hurt a victim. No! it does not happen that way.
The same could be said of the three youngsters in the South Road incident. These guys did not “suddenly become criminals”; they were into criminal business for a long time. From all accounts, they were nurtured into it by family members who gave them the leeway. Criminal minds follow a certain prescribed path, only when they are caught does this process come to an abrupt end.
In an effort to shield and protect this depraved and seemingly hopeless felon, the family members are making up excuses for him. Stop making excuses, he is a dangerous individual who in his sick mind has carried out an horrendous act and killed her, this maniacal monster in youthful disguise has preyed on one of the most vulnerable in our midst, a virtual baby. We cannot allow him to get away with it; down with this monstrosity.
Instead of making up excuses for the youngster, family members should have seen to it that this guy received the help he needs, because clearly, he needs help for his depraved ways. Secondly, they should have ensured that he attended school. Go to school, get an education, if you are not academically inclined then learn a skill, learn to play an instrument, play pan, go practise some strenuous sport activity such as football, rugby, wrestling or even boxing. Wasting one’s time watching porn would only heighten the likelihood of that individual wanting to commit those sex acts. The old adage: “The devil finds work for idle hands” is a case in point.
I close by saying we have to protect the young and helpless children in our midst. We must be the voice for these infants saying we will not tolerate child abuse. Let us seek justice for our little ones.
