Eccles storage area blaze still being investigated

Written By Michel Outridge
FOLLOWING the fire that consumed a shed which adjoins a building at Eccles Industrial Site, East Bank Demerara, Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle said that the storage area blaze is still being investigated as well as its ownership and occupancy.

He told the Guyana Chronicle that it was a complicated fire because chemical solutions were stored at the building and the fire rapidly got out of control, noting that there were flammable substances in the building.

Gentle added that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded to the fire call with six fire fighting trucks and they used 1,000 litres of foam to contain the blaze last Wednesday night.

He also commended the firemen for the job they did under risky circumstances.

The conflagration started just before 19:00 hrs following an explosion which quickly ignited a fire that destroyed the storage bond building and a shed.

The Chief Fire Officer noted that so far they cannot make a pronouncement on the cause of the fire as investigations are still underway.
