Duke Lodge bartender fined for stealing money

BARTENDER Dhanpaul Dhanraj, of Roraima Duke Lodge Hotel, in Duke Street, Kingston, Georgetown, was fined $50,000 with the alternative of six months imprisonment on conviction for simple larceny yesterday.The convict, of Lot 3 Old Road, Providence, East Bank of Demerara, pleaded guilty to the offence, admitting to Magistrate Judy Latchman that, on Sunday, October 20, in Kingston, Georgetown, being employed by Roraima Airways Incorporated, he stole $17,259.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, said Dhanraj’s responsibilities include taking orders from customers, collecting money and issuing bills for sales.
The prosecutor said, that day, Dhanraj was on the 15:00 hrs to 23:00 hrs shift, during which he collected $22,400 from a costumer for food and drink. However, at the end of his shift, he only handed over $5,127.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, representing Dhanraj, said Dhanraj works hard to take care of his mother and sister and should not be incarcerated since he already spent three days in the lock-up.
The lawyer said Dhanraj was “tempted to touch” as a resulted of his situation but
Magistrate Latchman told defence counsel she hopes he teaches his client the word of God so that he would not be led into temptation.
