AFTER winning a controversial final over the Queenstown-based Demerara Cricket Club in the inaugural Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)-organised, New Building Society-sponsored 40 overs second division tournament last year, the Devon Lord-led Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) will be looking to repeat as champions, when they face Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) in this year’s final today.
The action bowls off at 10:00hrs at the Camp Road-based Everest Cricket Club ground and according to GCC skipper Devon Lord, his ultimate goal is to retain the title and prove that they are the best second division team in Georgetown.
“At last year’s final, we showed we have the confidence as a team in all departments. We were having a stern competition from DCC last year, one that we were looking forward to and it’s rather unfortunately the game ended controversially.
“However, this year we will not be taking MYO lightly, but with the confidence that is presently oozing from the guys, we are optimistic about the victory and that is what we will be going out there to do tomorrow (today) – win and prove that GCC is the best second division team in Georgetown.”
Lord will be looking to capable players like Martin Pestano-Belle, Almando Doman, Bernard Bailey, Ellon Fernandes, Winston Fernandes and Cleyon Critchlow, along with Under-15 sensation Ronaldo Ali Mohamed to see GCC to the trophy for a second year.
However, in MYO lies a formidable foe, who according to skipper Chien Gittens does not intend to give up easily without putting up a fight, despite the opposition.
“This is cricket and it is not played with names on paper, but rather on the field of play and when we go out there tomorrow (today), our aim is to defeat them and come away with the win,” said Gittens.
While not much can be said about the MYO lineup, Gittens will have support from the hard-hitting Richard Latiff and Anthony Ifill, coupled with the never-say-die efforts of Shafeek Ishmael – with both bat and ball – Imtiaz Pooran and Dave Parsram, making today’s fixture an exciting one to witness.
