A MINI-BUS driver who allegedly stabbed another with a pair of scissors after they quarreled over a passenger, was remanded to prison yesterday by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The defendant, Dwayne Darrel, 32, of Lot 320 Craig, East Bank of Demerara, is charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Shamroy Victor in Georgetown on October 21.
The married father of two pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said that the two mini-bus drivers were soliciting passengers when an argument arose between them and it was, later, reported that Darrel armed himself with the scissors and dealt Victor several stabs to his body.
The wounded man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he is currently a patient.
However, Defence Counsel Paul Fung-a-Fat, for Darrel, claimed the stabbing was in self-defence, after the latter stole a passenger from his mini-bus and Victor became angry and attacked him with a ‘jooker’.
The lawyer applied for Darrel’s pre-trial
liberty but the Prosecutor objected, citing the seriousness of the crime Darrel is alleged to have committed and the fact that the virtual complainant is still hospitalised.
The Chief Magistrate upheld the objection and ordered Darrel to make his next appearance on October 30.
