VICE-CHAIRMAN of Region 5 (Mahaica/Berbice), Mr. Rion Peters, has urged residents there to view educating their children as a collaborative effort between them and the Government of Guyana.
He made the appeal, on Monday, while addressing the audience, inclusive of parents, teachers and students, gathered for the commissioning of a new wing of the Fort Wellington Secondary School.
Peters pointed out that the Government has continued to pour its resources into the development of the education sector within the region and it is now their responsibility to ensure that they make full use of them.
“And, as a region, we need to share that belief; we need to see educating our children as not only the responsibility of our government but it should be a collaborative effort between the government and the people of this region,” he reiterated.
He said, over the years, the Government of Guyana has been answering the calls of citizens of the country and the commissioning of the new part of the school building shows that the calls of the residents of Region 5 have been answered.
“We need to see this annex as an endorsement of the continued effort of the Government of Guyana and the people of this country to ensure that our children receive the best quality education,” Peters stated.
He said the Government of Guyana believes that one of the fundamental ways of reducing poverty in the society is through education and, with the addition to the school structure; they hope to see an improvement in the results at that institution.
Peters assured that the education sector will continue to move from strength to strength and pointed out that Fort Wellington Secondary has been known to be improving.
He advised that the teachers, parents and teachers find their place in the cycle of development and not allow themselves to be caught in the web of destruction, since they can only ensure the development of the region through education and allowing each and every citizen a fair opportunity.
