Hire car driver is latest Essequibo road fatality – passenger clinging to life at GPHC

FELIX Layne, 56, of Onderneeming Sand Pit, Essequibo Coast was killed when the hire car he was driving on Monday afternoon slammed into a canter lorry on the Onderneeming Public Road at about 15:45 hrs.

Police report that the driver of motor lorry GLL 5313 was proceeding along the roadway when Layne, at the controls of taxi HB 6417, allegedly drove out of an access road and onto the main road, causing a collision with the motor lorry.
Layne was reportedly proceeding from Onderneeming Sand Pit when he crashed into the canter lorry while turning onto the public road. The impact of the accident killed him and seriously wounded the lone passenger in the car, Maxine Henry, who was rushed to the nearby Suddie Hospital and admitted, before being subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she is battling for her life. The canter driver is in police custody assisting with investigations.
Only last week, an allegedly alcoholic woman was struck down by a canter lorry and killed on the spot, after she had run across the road suddenly and ended up in the path of the canter.
