RAHAMAN’S Park, in Georgetown, was beautifully set, with flames hanging from the roof, the scintillating smells of premium meats on open grills and an array of mood lighting for what was to be an evening to remember.

It was the magnificent opening of Guyana Fashion Week 2013 hosted there on Sunday last.
Cocktails with hosts and hostesses presenting menus to patrons, along with tastefully decorated tables, resplendent in bold colours and covered in creative works of art lay before a capacity audience and that was just the beginning.
Those in attendance were treated to music, eye-catching and mouth-watering delicacies and even surprised with a fashion show featuring the creations of designers from six countries, including The Bahamas, United States (U.S.), Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
Fashion models waited on the guests quite in keeping with the occasion’s fashionable theme.
Chairperson of Guyana Fashion Week, Sonia Noel was the official grande dame for the ball which was hosted by Directors Ronnie Morris (Barbados) and Richard Young (Trinidad).
CULINARY COMPETITION
In the end, the true focus of the event was the culinary competition, where fierce rivalry took place between six teams each representing one of the fruits/ vegetables abundantly grown in Guyana.
After serving starters, main course and dessert, the title went to Natasha David (famous for her banana dolls) and Denzil Doom representing the coconut.
Their area was well decorated with the leaves of the beautiful coconut tree and their choice of gold metallic seating complimented their attractive table displays made of young coconuts which were painted and sprayed with gold glitter.
Second place was awarded to Team Tomato, which boasted a mannequin bedecked in red fabric, with a headpiece curiously made of lettuce with a floral arrangement resembling tomatoes.
Third position was won by Team Watermelon, which had the audience buzzing with their fantastic pork main course and watermelon and ice cream dessert.
Chairperson of the Judging Panel was Carnegie School of Home Economics Principal, Penelope Harris while special guests included the former Miss Guyana World, Arti Cameron, as well other notables in the world of fashion, music and dance.
COURTS and Fly Jamaica aspiring designers’ showcase is scheduled for tomorrow at 19:00 hrs and various related workshops will he conducted throughout the week, leading up to the big runway shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
