LORETTA Evans, 52, of Mahdia, one of the four persons killed in last Friday’s horrific smash-up between a Route No. 72 minibus and a sand truck at Coverden, East Bank Demerara, is to be buried at Mahdia tomorrow.The first of the four who perished in the accident to be buried, Evans was travelling with two other family members, her nephew Delroy Evans, 23, and his three-year-old daughter Maya. Delroy Evans perished in the accident, but his daughter Mia who survived with serious injuries, is currently a patient in the Paediatric Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), and is said to be recovering favourably.
Delroy Evans and two others, Cosbert Felix Marc, the driver of the minibus, and Pulmattie Samaroo are yet to be buried.
The other survivors who were admitted to hospital, Savitri Thomas, Orson Ridley and Kelly Douglas have since been discharged and are resting at their respective homes. The fifth survivor, Akim Cave of Nutmeg Street, North Ruimveldt, even though injured, was not admitted to hospital, but is currently at home on doctor’s medication. He too is said to be in a stable condition.
Meanwhile, the 19-year-old driver of the sand-laden truck, GPP 8495, who reportedly caused the accident and was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a state of shock, was kept for observation for four days. He was discharged on Tuesday and is expected to appear in court shortly to answer charges of dangerous driving, being an unlicensed driver and leaving the scene of the accident, among other offences.
Repish Bhagwandin of Hope, East Coast Demerara, who was said to be driving at a fast rate, overtook a canter truck which was parked on the Coverden Public Road and crashed into the Mahdia-bound Route Number 72 minibus, BPP 3521, driven by Felix Marc.
