Man shot while celebrating birthday

A MAN was shot in his right side chest last Tuesday night, by a licensed firearm holder who claimed he was the victim of a robbery.  Dunstan Simpson, 34, of Number 53 Village, Corentyne, suffered the injury following an altercation with another man from Georgetown, on Main Street, New Amsterdam, also in Berbice.

The city shooter has been identified as Gershwin Sullivan called ‘Red Man’, 33, of George Street, Werk-en-Rust.
Jason Bacchus, 24, of Lot 184 Shell Road, Kitty, in Georgetown, too, was in the company of Sullivan at the time of the incident but conflicting reports were given of incident.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Simpson said he was celebrating his birthday when he purchased some beverages from a popular bar on Main Street, New Amsterdam.
He said, after purchasing the drinks, he went over to Demico Qik Serve and was standing in front of the place when a security guard told him he is not permitted to drink on the premises.

Verbal exchange
Simpson said an argument ensued because he questioned why he could not drink there and, during the verbal exchange, two men who were next to a parked car intervened and one of them reached into the vehicle and collected a hatchet, with which he lashed him on his head.

Simpson said, after receiving the blow, he saw Sullivan pulling out a gun from which three gunshots were fired and one struck him.
On the contrary, Police sources related that Sullivan said he and Bacchus went to Demico to buy food and, while the latter was making the purchase, Simpson approached him and pulled off his gold band.
Sullivan said after he was relieved of his jewel, the thief began running and he then discharged two shots in the air and chased after Simpson.
When Sullivan caught up with Simpson, in a nearby bar, it is alleged that the latter threw two bottles at him which led to a scuffle and, during the melee, the former fired a third shot which wounded the accused thief and he was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital and admitted.
Sullivan, reportedly, made a report at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam and is presently in custody, assisting with the continuing investigations.
Meanwhile, Simpson is expected to undergo a minor surgery to remove the bullet from his chest.
